My Anti-Hero by Tijan

Have you ever felt like a book should really be someone else’s therapy session?

When I picked up the latest book by Tijan (whose books I sometimes adore and sometimes abhor), A Trauma Dump was not what I expected to read. But somehow, both the main character, Billie and her insta-love love-interest, Brett Broudou, think it is perfectly acceptable to share.

Billie, the lone survivor of a famous serial killer whom she sent to prison, meets Brett, her state’s newest football star, after agreeing to appear on a local news show.

And they bump into each other, literally. The whirlwind romance is fast and a bit stupid.

The more interesting part of the story is Billie’s life becoming a bit more public again since she has basically been in hiding since she was twelve years old and was an almost-victim of The Midwest Butcher. Not only does her relationship with Brett thrust her back into the limelight, thanks to some viral video clips. But so does a copycat killer, who she fears is looking for her.

Somehow, so much happens in this book, but nothing is all that interesting. The romance is boring, and the character development is confusing and lacking. It felt like this book was rushed and far too long.

One of the worst parts for me was the lack of sports in this “sports romance.” There is a huge reason why I didn’t include that genre in my review.

The only thing that kept me interested in this book was that there was a mystery, and I wanted to get to the end and solve it. I am not exactly sure if I am happy that I continued because sometimes things are just too much, which makes it dull.

I’d skip this one if you were considering it in the first place.
